Relationship between Jubal and Mike

Stranger in a Strange Land

Mike and Jubal’s relationship is a chosen father-son bond grounded in affection, candor, and the rare trust of being able to speak without overwhelming the listener. When Mike returns to Jubal, he does not come for a meal or practical shelter: he comes looking for his father, whose steadiness lets him examine painful questions and reconsider what he is trying to do among human beings.

A Father by Choice

Jubal is leaving the table when Mike enters and greets him as Father, embracing and kissing him. Jubal gently unwinds himself from the embrace, tells Mike to be his age, and offers to sit with him over breakfast. Mike declines the meal as his purpose: he came to find Jubal, and wants them to go somewhere to talk. The exchange establishes their characteristic balance. Mike’s affection is immediate and physical; Jubal accepts it, then guides the moment back toward ordinary conversation rather than turning it into a display.

The Trusted Confidant

Mike describes Jubal as the one human being he can always talk to, knowing that Jubal will understand him without being overwhelmed. He distinguishes this confidence from his closeness with Jill, Dawn, and Patty. They understand him, but his distress would hurt them more deeply; Patty might take his hurt onto herself. Mike therefore holds back what he has not yet understood or made meaningful, while trusting Jubal to hear it. The relationship is not a denial of Mike’s intimacy with the others, but a distinct form of support: Jubal can receive a difficult confession without making Mike responsible for protecting him in return.

Mike connects this need to his intention to introduce confession into his church as part of its early spiritual discipline. He notes that existing confession often comes only after a pilgrim no longer truly needs it, and argues for strong listeners who can help bear another person’s troubling sense of sin or wrongness. His reflection makes his conversation with Jubal an example of the practice he hopes to establish: confession is a form of care that requires someone capable of hearing pain without being consumed by it.

Goodness and Wisdom

Mike tells Jubal that goodness by itself is insufficient: good intentions need hard, cold wisdom if they are to accomplish good. He recalls his earlier mistake of assuming that goodness and wisdom were identical, as he understands them to be among Martians. His account of Jill’s early confusion, and of how her patience helped both of them become more settled, shows why he now distinguishes moral goodness from sound judgment. He nearly destroyed them both while learning to be human and while Jill was learning what he knew.

This distinction explains why Mike needs Jubal not only as someone he loves but as a person whose judgment can temper his own. When Mike proposes making confession to him, Jubal resists the formality and asks him simply to say what is troubling him; he promises that they will find a way out. Their exchange makes practical counsel itself a demonstration of their bond. Jubal does not claim a grand spiritual office in Mike’s life; he offers attention, plain speech, and help.

A Changed Purpose

Mike’s confidence in Jubal also permits him to revisit the project that once disappointed his father. Discussing the possibility that human beings might try to remake the Martians, Mike recognizes that forcing them to live like Martians would be destructive. Jubal points out that this is what Mike himself had once been trying to do. Mike answers that this was how he began, but it is no longer what he is trying to do, and admits that he knew Jubal had been disappointed in him at the start.

Jubal does not turn that admission into a judgment; he calls it Mike’s business. The brief response preserves Mike’s responsibility for his own change while leaving room for honest recognition between them. By returning to Jubal when troubled, and by speaking openly about both his old purpose and his revised one, Mike shows the continuing importance of a father who can love him without taking his choices away. Their relationship joins warmth to correction: Jubal is a refuge for confession, but also the trusted human voice that can identify a contradiction Mike needs to face.
